The Cross River Basin Development Authority (CRBDA) has called for deeper collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Government to drive the implementation of the Federal Government’s Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) projects in the state.
The Managing Director of CRBDA, Obongawan Glory Oho, made the call on Thursday when she led a delegation of the Authority on a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. Ubuo Ubuo, Ph.D., in Uyo.
Obongawan Oho explained that the SPIN project, an initiative of the Federal Government in partnership with the World Bank, is aimed at modernizing irrigation systems, enhancing dam safety, expanding hydropower generation, and boosting agricultural productivity nationwide.
She noted that with its rich arable land and rising demand for sustainable water and power solutions, Akwa Ibom stands to benefit immensely from the programme.
“The SPIN project presents a unique opportunity for Akwa Ibom to harness its water resources for food security, energy generation, and climate resilience. Strong collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation will ensure that the people of the state fully benefit from this transformative programme,” she said.
Also speaking, CRBDA’s Director of Planning and Design, Dr. Ndon Abia, revealed that the Authority has already secured over 2,100 hectares of land earmarked for SPIN-related projects in Akwa Ibom.
He emphasized the Authority’s readiness to partner closely with the state government to ensure smooth execution and alignment with local development needs.
In his response, Commissioner for water Resources and Sanitation, Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Ubuo commended the proactive steps of CRBDA and congratulated Obongawan Oho on her appointment as Managing Director, describing her leadership as a source of pride to Akwa Ibom people.
He assured the delegation of the state government’s readiness to partner with CRBDA, in line with Governor Umo Eno’s focus on food security, renewable energy, and sustainable water resource management.
The Commissioner further pledged that Akwa Ibom would meet all eligibility requirements for participation in the SPIN project, including the establishment of legal backing for Water Users Associations, provision of counterpart funding, and required infrastructure.
The courtesy visit, observers say, marks a major step in strengthening federal–state collaboration on SPIN, which forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at enhancing food security, water resource management, hydropower generation, and climate resilience across Nigeria.
